Mission
Loneliness has become increasingly prominent in college students, with massive health reprecussions. As someone who has experienced deep loneliness, I set out to find answers on why this may be increasing and attempt to generate some solutions.
Exploration & Research
Interactive poster developed to gain insight into students' feelings on loneliness
Sketch, sleep, research, repeat!
In the first 3 months of this project, I consumed so many books and articles pertaining to loneliness. I also interviewed psychology professors at my university in order to gain insights into human interaction.
After gaining some understanding on why individuals may be feeling lonely, I created interactive art installations around the art campus, both to gain data and also to experiment with ways to create connection.
LonelyLess Mobile
Applying my findings regarding the nature of loneliness, I found that an app could be an accessible tool to help break the cycle of loneliness and find meaningful connections.
Initial Assessment
When users first sign up, they must take an assessment that determines their loneliness on the UCLA scale. This helps determine what approach should be taken.
Daily Journaling
Proven to help, upon app launch, users will be prompted to input their current mood with a text box to input more about their feelings or answer a prompt.
Distraction & Mindfulness
Based on research, behavioral activation is a key tool to use against loneliness. This means distracting and grounding the user with activities.
Events & Personalization
Users can navigate to the events tab to see upcoming events on campus, with LonelyLess organized events marked with Dewey the program's mascot.
LonelyLess Commercial
LonelyLess Magazine
To offer a more tactile approach for behavioral activation, a publication was developed to offer relevant articles, cognitive behavioral therapy exercises, and fun activity suggestions.
